Research-Grade Civil / Geotechnical Engineering
LoGoS Scientific Engineering Ltd is a UK-based civil and geotechnical engineering consultancy delivering research-grade analysis and design, built on engineering experience dating back to 2001. Led by Mesut Irgat (BSc, MSc, PhD Candidate, GMICE), the practice operates at the intersection of professional consultancy and active academic research, offering clients a level of technical rigour more commonly found in university laboratories than in commercial practice.
We cover the full geotechnical design cycle — from site investigation and laboratory testing programmes through to the determination of design parameters and complete 1D–3D numerical and analytical modelling in PLAXIS, CODE_BRIGHT, Geo5, GROUP and SAP2000. Our design services span shallow and deep foundations, retaining walls, slope stability, soil–structure interaction, ground improvement and seepage analysis, extending to reinforced concrete, steel, timber and composite structures under both static and dynamic conditions. Every model and result is fully validated and verified against Eurocode 7 and British Standards, so that each design we deliver is rigorous, buildable and economical.

Technical excellence alone does not deliver a project. Cost overruns, poorly drafted contracts and unquantified risk sink more schemes than engineering failures do — which is why we treat the commercial dimension with the same analytical discipline we bring to structural and geotechnical design. Our commercial services cover cost planning and management, material cost and unit-rate analysis, budget control through continuous data analysis, and the full financial appraisal of civil engineering projects. We build cost models grounded in real measurement rather than assumption, so that a project's financial position is known — and defensible — at every stage.
That same rigour extends across the tendering and contractual lifecycle. We manage tenders end to end, from bills of quantities and contract conditions to the assembly of complete tender documentation, and we advise on the technical and economic merits of bids before commitments are made. Once a contract is live, we review terms and conditions, manage contractual obligations, and handle claims and disputes when they arise. Underpinning all of this is our risk work: the systematic identification, analysis and mitigation of project risk — including RAMS preparation, risk optimisation and the drafting of technical specifications. The outcome is a project that is not only sound in its engineering, but secure in its economics and defensible in its contracts.
Research: high-level radioactive waste
Our core research specialism lies in the geotechnical engineering of deep geological repositories for high-level radioactive waste. Through ongoing doctoral research, we investigate the hydro-mechanical behaviour of compacted bentonite buffers — the engineered clay barrier that surrounds waste canisters and constitutes the primary safety element of a repository. This work combines advanced laboratory testing (swelling and compression behaviour under controlled suction and stress paths) with constitutive modelling using the Barcelona Basic Model and fully coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) simulation in CODE_BRIGHT.
A particular focus is the long-term chemical and mechanical performance of bentonite in combination with engineered additives, addressing questions of swelling capacity, sealing ability and barrier integrity over repository timescales. This expertise translates directly into commercial capability in waste geotechnics, hazardous containment, low-permeability barrier design and any project where coupled soil behaviour — heat, water, stress and chemistry acting together — governs performance.
Why “ Logos (λόγος) “
In Greek philosophy, logos meant reason, proportion and the intelligible order underlying the world — the conviction that things behave according to principles, and that those principles can be known. That conviction is the foundation of both scientific research and sound engineering practice. It is why we test rather than assume, model rather than estimate, and verify rather than trust. Our name is a statement of method.
Built, Not Only Designed
Our engineering judgement is grounded in construction. Since 2002 — through Irgat Construction Industry Ltd (2002–2020) and MENSIS Scientific Engineering & Geotechnics Services (2017–present) in Türkiye, and LoGoS Scientific Engineering Ltd (2021–present) in the United Kingdom — we have delivered civil, structural and specialist works across the public and private sectors as main contractor, project manager and designer, managing every stage from tender preparation and contracting through construction to final acceptance. This is not consultancy at a distance. It is the experience of having stood on site while a design meets reality, and of being accountable for the result.
That record spans buildings of unusual technical demand. We have constructed scientific research and medical laboratories, including cadaver examination rooms, DNA analysis laboratories and specialist facilities for the protection of natural assets, alongside operating theatres and healthcare buildings. We have delivered acoustic works — concert amphitheatres, recording and radio-broadcast studios, and music education institutions — where sound isolation and structural detailing leave no margin for approximation. Our structural work covers steel, reinforced concrete, timber and composite construction: space-frame roofs, shell roofing, asymmetric vaults, and deep excavation and shoring. We have built full and semi-Olympic pools, educational institutions, libraries, and public infrastructure including sewers, potable-water pipelines and irrigation canals.
Where a project has demanded both design and delivery, we have provided both. At Karsiyaka Municipality's semi-Olympic indoor pool, we acted as main contractor and project manager while also carrying out the structural design of the curved steel roof — redesigning the girders as circular hollow sections to suit a long-span, standing-seam enclosure. It is this combination that defines us: engineers who calculate, and contractors who build what they have calculated.
